Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days / 4 Nights

We’ll pick you up early from your hotel in Cusco and drive to Mollepata, where you’ll enjoy breakfast overlooking the stunning Andean valleys. From there, the trek begins toward Soraypampa (our first campsite), surrounded by towering snow-covered peaks and crisp mountain air.

In the afternoon, hike up to Humantay Lake, a turquoise jewel at the base of Mount Humantay. This short acclimatization hike offers a spectacular introduction to the Andes. Return to camp for a warm dinner under a starry sky before resting for the next day’s challenge.

After a nourishing breakfast, begin the toughest but most rewarding section of the trek. Ascend to the Salkantay Pass (4,650 meters), the highest point of the route, with the majestic Salkantay Mountain (6,271 meters) dominating the skyline. From the top, take in sweeping views of glaciers and sacred Andean peaks revered by the Incas.

After some well-deserved rest, descend through changing landscapes — from cold highlands to the lush high jungle. Arrive at Chaullay, a peaceful village where you’ll rest in a rustic lodge surrounded by the sounds of rivers and tropical birds.

Today’s trek is more relaxed, as you follow the Santa Teresa Valley through lush vegetation, waterfalls, and local farms producing coffee, bananas, and avocados. This section highlights the rich biodiversity of the Andean jungle.

You’ll reach Lucmabamba, an agricultural community where you’ll learn about the traditional process of coffee cultivation and roasting. Enjoy a fresh cup of locally grown coffee and connect with the locals before dinner and an overnight stay in an eco-lodge surrounded by nature.

Begin the day hiking along an ancient section of the Inca Trail to Llactapata, surrounded by orchids and tropical birds. Upon reaching the Llactapata archaeological site, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of Machu Picchu from a rarely seen perspective — a truly magical moment.

Continue downhill to the Hydroelectric station for lunch, then follow the railway trail along the Urubamba River to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town). Spend the night in a comfortable hotel, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, and rest before your final adventure.

Early in the morning, board the bus up to Machu Picchu and witness the sunrise over one of the most iconic sites on Earth. During the guided tour, your expert guide will explain the mysteries of the citadel’s temples, terraces, and observatories.

Afterward, enjoy free time to explore on your own or hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (pre-booking required). Later, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and board the train back to Cusco, marking the end of an unforgettable Andean adventure.
