The Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour is an unforgettable experience in the Andes of Cusco. Palccoyo Mountain is often referred to as the sister of the famous Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain). Here, you will witness breathtaking landscapes painted with natural shades of green, ochre, blue, yellow, and white. We will hike together through a serene and magical environment filled with colors created by nature itself.
A fascinating geological process aligned the earth’s strata into multicolored layers, producing a rainbow-like natural effect. Along the route, you will discover a mountain range formed by three colorful peaks. Unlike the more crowded Vinicunca, Palccoyo offers a unique visual spectacle with fewer tourists, allowing you to enjoy peace and tranquility in the Andes.
The hike to Palccoyo is very friendly and accessible, requiring only about one hour of walking with no steep ascents. This makes it the perfect option for travelers seeking a light adventure. You will have plenty of time to soak in the scenery and breathe fresh air at an altitude of 4,900 meters above sea level.
The best season to enjoy the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour (shared service) is between April and October, when the weather is sunnier and the mountain’s colors shine even brighter. During this time, you will enjoy a complete Andean experience, blending culture, geology, and Cusco’s stunning natural beauty.
Itinerary
Day 01 Detailed Itinerary – Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour (Shared Service)
We will begin the tour at 05:30 AM in Cusco’s Plaza de Armas. From there, we board our tourist transport and drive for about 2.5 hours to the town of Checacupe. In this charming village, we will visit three historic bridges: Inca, Colonial, and Republican, each representing a different era. Here, you’ll have time to take photographs and appreciate the living history of the valley.
We then continue for another 1.5 hours by car until we reach the Palccoyo Rainbow Range, located at 4,900 meters. From this point, we begin a soft 40-minute hike. During the walk, you will observe Andean valleys, eroded glaciers, and striking rock formations with vibrant colors. The view reveals a natural rainbow created by unique geological layers.
Our exploration also includes the Stone Forest of Ccacca Loma and the Red Mountain. You will enjoy panoramic views of the Four Lakes Circuit: Acopia, Pomacanchis, Posposqo Cocha, and Misky Cocha. It is also possible to spot high-Andean birds and admire the grandeur of the Vilcanota Mountain Range. This area is perfect for photos, quiet contemplation, and nature appreciation.
After visiting the site, we return by bus to Cusipata, where a traditional Andean buffet lunch awaits us. After lunch, we continue the drive back to Cusco, arriving at Plaza Regocijo around 5:00 PM. The day closes with unforgettable memories of unique landscapes and authentic Andean experiences at the Rainbow Mountain.

October 12, 2025The tour starts very early type 3-4 am, how good you can sleep on the way, we breakfast in a very good buffet and then depart for the mountain. Here the height is the problem, you can walk up but it requires a lot of condition, the good thing is that there are horses that you can pay and for 90 suns they leave you 15-20 minutes from the top. Wear layered clothes as you can warm up when climbing. We already walk down and the road is much easier. On horseback you go up in 40 minutes, you are on the mountain an hour to take pictures and the return is about 1 hour or so. In the end we still had lunch in the same very rich buffet!

What a beautiful place!!! Most of us went up there on mules. Important to clarify if the person weighs more than 110 kg he will not be able to carry it and will have to walk up . . . It is still very expensive, to have proper footwear
